Dr. John E. Maupin, Jr. is a distinguished retired healthcare executive with more than 40 years of transformative leadership in dentistry, public health, community health, and health professions education.

Overview

Dr. Maupin served as President of the National Dental Association in 1984 and currently holds the role of Senior Advisor to CINQCARE, Inc., a community-centered ambulatory healthcare system based in New York.

Dr. Maupin’s remarkable career includes serving as the fifth President of Morehouse School of Medicine (2006–2014) and the ninth President of Meharry Medical College (1994–2006), where he became the first alumnus and only the second dentist to lead the institution. In recognition of his extraordinary contributions, Meharry Medical College named him its first-ever President Emeritus.

A native of Los Angeles, Dr. Maupin attended San Jose State University and earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from Meharry Medical College in 1972. He completed a general dentistry residency at Provident Hospital and obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Loyola University Maryland in 1979.

His extensive leadership experience spans roles such as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Morehouse School of Medicine, CEO of Southside Healthcare, Inc., Deputy Commissioner of Health for the Baltimore City Health Department, and Dental Director of the West Baltimore Community Health Center. A dedicated military professional, Dr. Maupin served as a career dental officer in the U.S. Army Reserves, culminating in his retirement in 1996 as Command Dental Surgeon for the 125th U.S. Army Reserve Command.

Dr. Maupin’s influence extends beyond healthcare institutions to corporate governance. He currently chairs the board of VALIC Company I, a mutual fund complex under Corebridge Financial, and has served on numerous corporate boards, including Enhabit Home Health and Hospice, Encompass Health, Regions Financial Corporation, LifePoint Hospitals, Monarch Dental Corp.

As a recognized expert in healthcare policy and administration, Dr. Maupin has testified before U.S. Senate and Congressional committees on critical issues such as minority health, health disparities, and workforce diversity. He has also provided strategic insights as a member of advisory boards for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the U.S. Department of Education.
