The Dr. Joseph L. Henry Scholarship honors the legacy of Dr. Joseph L. Henry (May 2, 1924 – October 11, 2011), an extraordinary leader in dentistry and education. Dr. Henry served as Dean of both Howard University College of Dentistry and Harvard School of Dental Medicine, leaving an indelible mark on both institutions and a lasting impact on the profession. His life exemplified scholarship, leadership, discipline, and service.
This scholarship recognizes dental students who reflect Dr. Henry’s values of excellence, determination, leadership, and service. Each year, up to four incoming first-year (D1) dental students are selected to receive a $3,000 award. Recipients are eligible for renewable awards for up to three additional academic years (D2-D4) at the same award amount of $3,000, contingent upon:
- Submission of an annual application, and
- Evidence of continued academic excellence and student leadership.
Eligibility Requirements and Criteria
Applicants must:
- Be a U.S. citizen or have permanent resident status.
- Be acceptance to a U.S. dental school accredited by ADA/CODA, or
- Be enrolled in a U.S. dental school accredited by ADA/CODA and a continuing scholarship recipient
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA
- Incoming first-year students: undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Continuing dental students (Rising D2-D4): dental school GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Provide evidence community service, reflecting the ideals of respect and selflessness.
All scholarship recipients must submit:
- A brief quotation expressing appreciation
- A 30-second video message within 30 days of notification
- These materials may be featured on the NDAF website and related publications.
Application Requirements
Incoming First-year Students
Applicants must submit the following:
- Official undergraduate college or university transcript
- Letter of acceptance from a U.S. dental school accredited by ADA/COD.
- Professional photo
- A letter of request for consideration (maximum 500 words) outlining financial need, academic achievements, community service, and the personal qualities and experiences that make you eligible for the scholarship.
- Three letters of recommendation:
- One from the Dean or Chair of your undergraduate degree program
- One letter from an undergraduate professor
- One letter from an individual of your choice (not from family members or students)
- Completed Photo and Video Release Form
Renewals Applicants
- Official dental school transcript
- Letter from the SNDA National or Local President confirming current membership status
- Evidence of continued on-time academic progress, and leadership and community service involvement
- Professional photo
- Curriculum Vita (CV)
- Two letters of recommendation.
- One letter from the Dean, Associate Dean of Students or Department Chair
- One letter from SNDA Faculty Advisor or Faculty member if no SNDA chapter and/or advisor
